1970 Dodge Challenger R/T from Death Proof

What other car can hold candle to the 1969 Dodge Charger?  Another Dodge.  A 1970 Dodge Challenger RT, at least that's according to Quentin Tarantino when he shot the car chase in Death Proof.

The scene is famous because of 3 things
  1. It was a long chase, close to 20 minutes, I believe.

  2. Incredible stunts by the co-star and professional stunt woman, Zoe Bell.  She practically made love to the Challenger as she rolled around on the hood.

  3. White Dodge Challenger vs. Black Dodge Charger -- two HEMI cars with nothing but raw power at their disposal.

The Dodge Challenger is an homage from the movie Vanishing Point, which I still yet have to see.  But it is clearly referenced by Zoe and Tracie Thom.

Here's a video clip of a 1970 Challenger R/T replica from Vanishing Point.

The 1970 Dodge Challenger RT is a serious car.  It's from a time what car experts refer to as the height of the muscle car days, around the late 60's to the early 70's.  Gasoline prices became a problem after that.  It came with 4 engine options:

  • - 383 cid Magnum four-barrel V8 with 335 hp

  • - 440 cid V8 with 375 hp

  • - 440 cid Triple carb V8 with 390 hp

  • - 426 Hemi

It's also available with 3-speed manual, 4-speed manual, and an automatic transmission.  Other RT specials include the Rallye suspension package, heavy duty drum brakes, and Wide Tread F70X14 tires.  The 1970 Dodge Challenger RT has been a very popular car with 76,935 of its various models built.
